Fake Bank Calls & App Update Scam 2026

People who want to cheat others pretend to be banks and trick users into installing apps or clicking bad links. They say that the user needs to upgrade their banking app.. Really they just want to steal money from the users account.
🔹 Detailed Explanation
This kind of cheating has been happening a lot in India lately. People get messages on their phone that say things like:
- “You need to upgrade your bank app now”
- “If you do not do your KYC your account will be blocked”
- “You need to update your security away”
These messages can look real because they use the banks name and logo. They might even look like they are coming from the bank.
If the user clicks on the link. Installs the bad app:
- They will see a banking page
- Or the app will secretly install tools that let the cheaters control the users device or banking information
Then the cheaters can take money from the users account without them knowing.
🔹 Main Conditions
- The cheater sends a message that looks like it is from a bank
- The message tries to scare the user into doing something away
- The user is asked to click on a link or download an app from outside the app store
- The user puts in their login information. Gives the app permission to do things
- The cheater gets access to the users account. Takes their money
- For example someone gets a message on WhatsApp that says:
” customer your SBI app will stop working if you do not update it now: [link]”
The user clicks on the link downloads the fake app and puts in their login information. Then within a minutes a lot of money is taken from their account.

- This kind of cheating is against the law according to the IT Act, 2000:
Section 43 says that it is illegal to access someones computer without permission
- Section 66 says that it is illegal to commit computer-related crimes
- It is also, against the law according to:
- Cheating, which is covered under IPC Section 420
- Identity theft, which is covered under IT Act Section 66C
If someone is found guilty of this kind of cheating they can be punished with jail time and a fine.
